St Lucia is arguably the most spectacular tropical paradise in the world. It’s a rare combination of lush rainforests, sulfur springs, pristine oceans and white sand. To compliment these surroundings are the breathtaking volcanic mountains, Gros Piton and Petit Piton Located in Soufriere.
Despite the elevation, Hiking is not allowed on Petit Piton due to the hazardous slopes. But it is permitted on Gros Piton Climb, which will provide you with amazing views atop plus a challenging and exciting mission to reach the summit. Hiking gros piton without a guide is not recommended . With an elevation of 2,619 feet you finally reach the peak, where you can enjoy the view of the incredible Caribbean Sea. The twin peaks have a unique pyramid shape to them, caused by lava spewing out over hundreds of years.

Because Gros Piton Nature Trail can be considered a difficult mountain to climb, it can take up to four to five hours to reach the top. But the ideal time of day to get started on a guided tour is right at the crack of dawn when the weather is at its coolest.
It is highly recommended that you bring:
• Suitable hiking shoes
• Plenty of sunscreen
• Long sleeved pullover
• Bottles of water
The trek begins at Fond Gens Libre, and continues through the pathways that lead you up to Gros Piton. This includes a remarkable passageway of volcanic pebbles. Whilst you'll be educated about the local plants and animals by your tour guide, you’re also welcome to ask any questions.
And once you’ve reached about half way, you will probably feel like a break. This is a great opportunity to take in the incredible views of Petit Piton... and get your camera out for a few shots.
Also, remember to keep any eye out for where you step. The stairs are made from volcanic rock that’s been lying there for hundreds of years. Don’t worry though, as your guide will inform you if you’re approaching a dangerous area that requires caution.

You’ll be wowed by the amazing plant life as you hike up Gros Piton… it really is quite unique. Plus, there are a wide variety of birds, and other interesting animals as well.
It’s likely you’ll also see remains left by the original inhabitants of this island - the Amerindians. And then there are the ancient caves that were used for slaves. Plus, there’s also the remainder of old plantations and sugar mills near the bottom of the volcanic peaks.
When you finally reach the top of the mountain, you’re in for another treat as you glance over at Vieux Fort and St Vincent.
