Fond Gens Libre- A Piece of History In 1748, Saint Lucia saw a rebellion among the island's slaves. These slaves took refuge in the Piton Mountains, including Fond Gens Libre, a settlement we will visit during our ascent. The rough roads that still exist here serve to showcase how hard the journey must have been for those who traversed the mountain during the rebellion. The mountains provided excellent hiding spots for the slaves and freedom fighters, and you will find that many of Fond Gens Libre's residents are direct descendants of these people. While in the settlement, you will find local produce stands that sell bananas and coconuts. The Hike of a Lifetime We will start our Gros Piton hike at base camp. While here, you will be able to ask any questions you may have and will learn more about the adventure that lies ahead of you. You will learn the route we will take as well as the rest points and attractions you will see during your ascent up the mountain. Once you are ready to depart, your friendly guide will take you up a set of volcanic stone stairs that form the beginning of your climb. Your trip is certainly a journey unlike any other, and you will find yourself surrounded by breathtaking views even before you are halfway up the mountain. About a quarter of the way up, the brilliant blue Caribbean waters will come into view and you will be able to see the island of St Vincent. The hike itself can be a bit strenuous, but the incredible views and the beauty of the area are more than enough to motivate you to get to the top. There is truly nothing quite like hiking Gros Piton, and the halfway point and rest stop will come before you even know it. Here, you will have an astounding view of Petit Piton set against a beautiful Caribbean background. While climbing Gros Piton is certainly an achievable feat, you will find that it is difficult enough to give you a real sense of accomplishment. You will find yourself climbing stairs made of volcanic rock, and there are areas where you will want to use your hands or a walking stick for extra support. With that said, however, your Real St Lucia Tours guide will ensure that you make it safely to the top. During your ascent of Gros Piton, you will get the chance to see some of the island's beautiful plant life. There are a number of incredible and rare plants on the island of St Lucia, and you will find many of them during your trip. Your guide will be happy to tell you more about the island's native vegetation throughout your trip. Of course, while the plants you see on your ascent are enough to take your breath away, they are nothing compared to the view you will have when you reach the top of the mountain. The View from the Top of Gros Piton Once you reach the top, you will be able to see St Lucia and the Caribbean in all of their majesty and the view and feeling of accomplishment are something you won't soon forget. The panoramic view from the top leaves you feeling like you are on top of the world, and the feeling you get is so incredible that it is almost surreal. From this vantage point, it feels almost as though you could touch the clouds. From here you can see the towns of Soufriere and Vieux Fort as well as a number of islands, and you can even see the colored rooftops of the island's fishing villages. Perhaps most remarkable, however, is the feeling that instead of a series of towns and villages, you are looking at a single space with no beginning and no end. The sky blends perfectly into the Caribbean waters, and the world feels infinitely huge. The descent down Gros Piton is a bit easier than the ascent, and the scenery is no less beautiful than it was on the way up.
